Contact Lens Golden Rules |
Contact Lens Golden Rules Clean Your Lenses Regularly – the #1 cause of contact lens complications (irritation, dryness, infections, permanent injury) is dirty lenses. It takes 1 minute/per day to clean your lenses so that they are safe to wear, breath properly on the eye, and give good vision. Change Your lenses Regularly – lens plastics will break down. These materials are biodegradable,
and have a finite life span. Lens lifespan varies due to a number of factors— type of plastic, the environment in which lenses are worn, how clean the lenses are maintained. Old lenses prevent oxygen flow to the eye, and cause permanent damage to the eyes. If Your Eyes are Very Irritated – take your lenses out!!! Clean your contact lenses, rest your eyes for a day, and try again. If the irritation persists, contact our office. Clean Your Lens Case and Replace it Regularly—lens cases are breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi. Clean your case with soap and water once every few days, and let it air dry. Keep a case at work or school in case your lenses give you problems. Always Wash Your Hands! – Use mild unscented soap (Ivory works well) and wash your hands well before handling your lenses. Use a clean lint-free towel to dry your hands too. Buy Name Brand Solutions—we recommend only certain products, based on safety and cleaning effectiveness. Please follow our recommendations to minimize future problems. When in Doubt... Get them out!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy a Pair of Glasses—if you wear your contacts all the time, STOP. Our eyes require periodic breaks from lenses, and wearing glasses periodically is wise. Also, have a pair of glasses handy in case your contacts are giving you problems. Cornea Check—all lens wearers must have a corneal check annually to ensure their eye is not being damaged by their contact lens. This safety check is to protect you from harm. If You Have Any Questions --- Call Us!!! Or email, or fax us. We are accessible to our patients, and we want you to enjoy your lenses and make them comfortable and safe for you to wear.
All contact lens problems are preventable. Please follow the Golden Rules to make your lens wearing enjoyable and safe.
